New York Dining

I'm currently in New York City for spring break. Here's where I will have dined as of this time tomorrow:

  • Momofuku Ssam Bar
  • Babbo
  • Jean-Georges
  • Sushi Yasuda
  • Tailor
  • New Green Bo
  • Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
  • WD-50

Tomorrow will be the last three of those, with New Green Bo (Chinese) for lunch, followed by ice cream, then WD-50 (avant garde, with a 3-star review in tomorrow's New York Times--they'll definitely be celebrating!) for dinner.

Tonight I also met Sam Mason of Tailor. In his restaurant were two San Francisco chefs to whom I spoke, Chris Cosentino of Incanto, and Jonnatan Leiva of Jack Falstaff. I also saw Jean-Georges Vongerichten, but did not get to meet him.

What foodie (and yes, I still use that term--just because other people misuse it doesn't mean I can't use it) wouldn't be envious of that week? I think even Chuck of ChuckEats could respect that week.

Can you make comments on the places you eat? I'll be in NYC in a few weeks and can't afford to eat well everyday, but maybe at some point... So maybe price range and a few thoughts? If you don't want to do it publicly, you can email me...

Cara, I'm gonna do a full write-up of most of them, complete with pictures. Expect them to pop up over the next week or two. But I can tell you that I have not had a single meal here that was not stellar. My meals were very well curated--the haute ones by me, the in-between ones by Jeanette's friend Marc, who is like New York City Guide in his amazing knowledge of dining at all price points in the city.

Also, we got great value while we were here. Jean-Georges for lunch is probably the best value in American haute cuisine--six or seven courses for about $35. Sushi Yasuda can be upwards of $200 for omakase, but for a top 5 in America sushi place, we got $20 pre-fixe sushi that was a perfect light dinner. For Tailor, we went for dessert (they have 3 and 5-course dessert tastings for $25 and $35), but we couldn't resist also getting a couple of their signature savory dishes, too. So we actually will have spent a lot less than it appears.
