My girlfriend and I are constantly getting into debates about where certain items of produce and should be stored--her mother pretty much put everything in the fridge, while mine left a lot of stuff out on the counter, or in cabinets. Each of us has always assumed that our mothers' practices were sound, and so we always get into arguments. Inevitably, whenever we look it up, my mother was right. It is usually unwise to question the fruit and vegetable practices of someone who grew up on a farm. But here are some more centralized resources for produce storage (additional hint: bread also stays out on the counter).
UC Davis has a handy PDF chart on how to store various fruits and vegetables, and here is a more detailed and comprehensive resource from another site. Also, you can apparently get a free poster print of the UC Davis chart by writing to them at the email address on the poster.
