There is a small market behind my house called Capella. Living here over the last year, I have had the luxury of last minute dinners, ice cream, beer, wine, etc. (and they have pretty good stuff). It's a mostly organic market. I love not doing big grocery shops because whatever I buy at the big places almost always goes bad before I use it since I can never predict my cravings...and I really choose my meals by cravings... So instead I eat like most Europeans do - buying food a day or so at a time. I love it.
Anyway, yesterday the guy ringing me up asked me if I found everything ok. I said yes, then he actually looked at me, realized who I was, and said, "Oh, well, yeah, you probably know where things are better than anyone else." Yay! I love being a regular at a small market where they know you and know that you know where things are and that you don't need a bag because you live right next door and only buy a few things at a time and if you do buy more things, you'll bring your own bag (they give you 5 cents off each time you bring your own bag). And that they know that they saw you yesterday and will see you tomorrow and may even see you another time today. I got locked out of my house yesterday when I was moving my roommate's car (she was in Canada for the weekend), and I went there to use their phone. They are incredibly nice, and I just like having that kind of neighborhood market feeling. I hope that the next place I move has some small market for me to frequent. Either that or I will just move to Europe.
Speaking of Europe, my friend Nick is in Berlin for a year, and he promises that he will send pictures and recipes of fabulous German foods for me to post here. So stay tuned, er, keep checking, or whatever you say with regard to blogs!

You could say, "So subscribe to the RSS feed." But that doesn't sound all that sexy.

Actually, RSS stands for "Really Super Sexy." I get laid all the time with my RSS feed. All. The. Time.
Cara, that is awesome and I envy your position. I also live right next to a market, but its not local, its a Publix. I have the same problem as you in that I make my meal choices based on cravings and can't predict a week in advance what I will want. The only downside is that I feel like I'm spending a lot of money when I drop $20 on every trip there, even though I'm getting far more food than I would for $20 eating out.
I do live right across the street from a local bakery (Uppere Crust) and seafood market ( Northwest Seafood). I'll have to pay them a visit. I don't know why I haven't yet, except for the fact that Upper Crust is kind of pricey.
