Food for Thought

The Nation just published its special Food Issue, boasting a meaty plethora of articles that probe all things food through all manner of lens: political, social, cultural, environmental, and ethical. With themes as diverse as repairing America's dysfunctional relationship with food, generating wider public awareness of and participation in U.S. farm policy, understanding food as a humanitarian good, and instituting the avant-garde concept of “eco-gastronomy,” there's plenty of material to mull over.

In Slow Food Nation, Alice Waters poetically writes that “food is destiny,” suddenly uplifting an everyday biological activity that is usually borne of necessity rather than pleasure, and placing it in an arena of greater portent. For me, food is a crucial part of my identity and personal history, but I have rarely thought about the political element to my food choices and the communal future I generate through the way I eat.

I'd highly recommend reading One Thing to Do About Food as it really got me thinking. Let me know your reax. Dig in.
